Hi all! So I am the proud new owner of a previously overloved 2002 explorer xls. It is experiencing what ive heard is relatively common for this year and thats the whine in the rear end. Ive done some independent research and saw that a lot of people have to have it fixed multiple times where as some people seem to replace everything and not have another problem. I am looking to build mostly a street vehicle on 22s but keep a little performance for occasional offroading. Im wondering what parts or what rear I should put in and what parts I need in order to not only get rid of the dreaded whining sound but make sure the rear end lasts me a good long time. Im not horribley experienced mechanically but any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Well see here S7 your problem really isnt that important so you are not going to get any help you silly boy!

But thats just not fair...ive posted twice and ive read other posts on it...im still right where I started...

There's about 20,000 threads on the rear end whine. You don't have to talk to yourself, you can read those and get any help you'll see. That's why nobody answered.

lol thank you. I have been reading a lot of them...I guess im just more interested in a performance upgrade. I never really see the point in fixing something back to the same condition it was in and risking having the same problem down the road. Id rhather put in the xtra effort now and not have to worry about it again lol

The replacement differentials we sell are guaranteed against noises, defects, etc. That's why we sell so many of them. I agree..it's not worth fixing something that can't be fixed.

Honestly ive looked at them already lol. Im not trying to be rude but im in the process of buying a house and I just bought this explorer...so in all honesty im curious as to what would happen should it die after the one year warranty?

You'd be on your own. We have to cut the warranty off somewhere. We've never had one come back or issues w/ them. I understand the finance thing.I've got a kid on the way..I have no money either.

Well I can understand that and the reasons behind it :) If the time comes that I need to replace it I will definitely keep you in mind :)

S7, mine has whined since new, but has never gotten better or worse. It has never seen any serious towing to speak of, heavy loads for many miles, or serious off-roading either (I know, I know - so why do I have it?). Now at 108K miles and 8+ years, still whining and still going.

Anyway, I'll keep mine until it grenades, which I suspect at the rate I'm going will be after the rest of the truck falls apart, so, in other words, I don't expect to ever fix it.

However, some have had theirs grenade, perhaps under heavy use. So if I read you right you want to upgrade before it grenades due to your expectation of heavy use.

If so, I would definitely rebuild or replace it 100%. I think you should consider a complete replacement if you want a more permanent fix. Rebuilding means all new seals, and you know the bearings have to go, plus the ring and pinion gear set has to be replaced. While in there, there is no sense in not replacing the clutch packs. In other words, keep the c-clips and throw ther rest away - said differently - that's a 100% replacement. That plus the need to know what you're doing when setting up the gear lash and end play, etc. means it's a job for pros. Given the parts and labor, I would buy a professionally assembled pumpkin with a warrantee for sure.

Oh, and the 'late' replies? This site does not get very much traffic. I only check it about once a week on average. Still a lot of guys here really know these trucks, just be patient.
