Rear window wiper

if you really wanna spray something at tailgaters you could always "relieve" yourself in the washer bottle, LOL friend of mine did this and aimed his from sprayers at the drivers window cause there was a man that always bugged him for rides so when he kept doing it he just gave him a little squirt

Found this info the other day on the NHTSA website:

"CONCERN : BACKGLASS WIPER SKIPS GLASS

Some 1998-2002 Explorer Sport and 1998-2001 Explorer/Mountaineers may exhibit a rear wiper that does not sufficiently clean the backglass. To service, first inspect for the letters 'AB’ stamped on the wiper arm just below the wiper blade pivot pin. If the letters are not stamped on the arm, install new service arm part # XL2Z-17526-AA. NOTE: Ensure that the new service arm assembly has the letters ‘AB’ stamped on it. Original wipers with ‘AB’ stamped near the pivot pin were revised to apply more pressure to the backglass."

And of course this will be at the owners expense. Ford would never admit that they sold you a $30k vehicle that didn't work as designed.

ok so what do you do if you have the AB already and bending the arm doesn't help?

My rear wiper are is a lil weird. Sometimes, when I turn it on, it always comes out of it's holster, but half the time it gets stuck on the other side when it's about to come back to the holster. I have no idea what it gets stuck on. It doesn't want to budge at all when I try to get it movin again, but it gives sooner or later and returns to normal operation (sometimes on it's own w/out my assistance).

OK, I got it... I took the wiper arm off and looked at the inside to see what limits the movement. There are a pair of "fingers" on either side of the spring that prevent the wiper from moving any closer to the window. Why? I don't know, but they are there. So, I removed the spring and swung the arm as far out as I could, then used a die grinder to shorten the stop fingers by about 1/16". This lets the spring pull the wiper arm closer to the rear window. Drove through some torrential downpours yesterday and it worked like a charm! :)

If anyone wants some pictures, I can certainly snag some. Feel free to e-mail me. :)

Joe,
Sounds like you found a possible solution for my rear arm too. If you do have a picture that would be great, but I'm sure I can get back there and take a look. Glad it is working for you...maybe there is hope yet??!!

My rear wiper brushes on the handle in the middle of the rear window. Mine is a '97 X, so I assume this is not the same problem you all have faced. However does anyone know where to go (other than a dealer) to get a new arm?

Shorter fingers work!

Thanks GIJOECAM,

I filed down the fingers and gone are the missed spots on the glass. Before I could actually watch as the arm would lift off the glass when wiping. After I filed down the fingers a little I placed the arm over the spot where it used to lift and I had full contact. I used a mirror and flashlight to see if I needed to file some more but there was a small gap still. I wet the window after reinstalling everything and had full wiper contact.

As far as I can tell, my arm is not an AB version.

Thank again.

My friend picked up a wiper arm from fordpartsnetwork.com for his '98 and was happy with the results. Cost him maybe $27 and he put it on during his 30 min. lunch break.

Edit: I tried bending mine a million ways on my old 93, but never worked. My Sport now just misses a little bit along the top, which is worth living with since I'm not ready to part with $30 just yet.

WOW!!! Here's one from the archives!!

I'm glad it worked for ya'! Mine is still working after a couple years now and even with a 16" blade, it wipes every inch of its travel.... Well, the wiper arm works when the motor works anyways. It's starting to not come up off the park position.... I'm not sure if it's the window latch switch, the low speed relay sticking, or the motor. I'm inclined to think it's the motor or the switch, probably the motor. Just need some time to tear it all apart and see, I guess. :)
