Rear wiper arm trouble

Any one have a problem with their ’91 rear wiper. When my wiper returns to the off position, the tab on the blade ends up between the sheet metal and the plastic lip.
The blade is supposed to be carried away from the window and rest on the plastic lip. As a result of the blade not being carried away from the window, when the window is opened, the blade catches on the wiper arm.

I had similar problems with mine also. Eventually, the wiper would not even sweep with motor turning. Turns out the wiper motor gearing is metal on nylon. When I took mine apart the metal screw had chewed up the teeth of the nylon gear. You have two options on replacement; try the salvage yard and hope to get one in good shape, or go to the dealer. For some reason you can't find an aftermarket rear wiper motor. I replaced mine with a new unit from the dealer at a cost of almost $280 in parts! They only carry the motors for a '94 so you also have to buy a new wiper arm as the newer motor has a 3/4" shaft. Sorry for going so long, hope this helps!

I had a similar problem after I changed the wiper blade with a refill. Turns out that the wiper blade hight determines how far the wiper arm is carried above the glass and thus if it will hang-up on the tip of the plastic rest or allow the wiper to slide into the park position. It's a close thing and hard to judge by eye, a matter of no more than a millimeter or so.
My fix was to find a deeper refill blade.

Thank you for your comments. Only Skip Pendle appears to understand my problem. The motor is not the issue, it is the wiper arm
that is not carried above the glass and thus will hang-up on the tip of the plastic rest. In my case, the wiper hangs up on the "rest" and slides between the sheet metal and the plastic rest.

I have replaced the blade but this did not help. Any one know of any brands that have a thick rubber part?

Thank you, Dr. Doug

Dr. Doug,
I understand your problem, mine did do the same thing. Hopefully the taller blade will prove to be the fix for you. Didn't work for me.

Excellent advice, Skip. I will try that this weekend!!!

Thanks again. Doug

Dr. Doug:
Evidently your plastic rest has pulled away from the sheetmetal. Mine was only a little loose but not enough for the wiper arm tab to fit between it and the bodywork.
My plan "B", which I didn't have to do, was to superglue the plastic rest so that the upper point was flush with the sheetmetal and file the inside (towards the body) lower edge of the wiper arm tab for a better sliding engagement with the upper point of the rest.
