FIRST OFF I HAVE A 91 EB X WITHTHE REAR WIPER THAT IS NOT FUNCTION ING BUT I DONT KNOW HOW TO GET IT OFF. I HAVE READ OTHER THREADS ON HERE ABOUT JUST TAKING THE NUT OFF THEN UNBOLTING THE MOTOR AND IT COMES TIGHT OFF BUT MY WIPER ARM HAS NO NUT VERY SMOTH LIKE THERE IS A COVER OVER IT BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY WAY TO GET THE "COVER" OFF IF THERE IS ONE. ANY IDEAS, ANYONE?:salute:

have you removed a wiper ARM (not blade) from the front?? its the same process. there should be a little lever to move, then the arm will pull off the shaft.

the wiper motor and gearbox is held in place from inside the tailgate by a few nuts or bolts.

The wiper motor on a 1st-gen rear hatch comes off by pulling the inside hatch panel, I think there are three screws holding the motor in. Bad rear wiper is another common fail item on a 1st gen.

I had the same issue ('93). The rear wiper on some Explorers has a very tiny nut on top of the shaft, hard to see). In addition, there is a little metal tab behind the arm, close to where the arm is mounted on the round shaft. You have to press the tab and then pull the arm away.

Be careful, as the arm will be in an angle when doing so. The sheet metal on the rear hatch is very thin. I used a pair of pliers to keep the mount as evenly as possible.

My motor was mounted with 3 bolts. Issue for mine not working was tons of dirt in the shaft (where it goes through the hatch), and around the motor. I washed everything with WD-40 (I didn't have any electrical parts cleaner), and it started working right away.

Thus this was only a temporary solution, it worked permanently till I sold it. Hope that helps.

Greetings!
