One problem which tends to emerge for older explorers is that the rear wiper does not clear the rear windshield properly. Initially when it happened to me I thought that my rear wiper was simply losing its seal so I replaced it to no avail. Eventually I found that the joint on the wiper arm had simply lost all of its movement which was causing the problem. The issue can be easily fixed on a dining room table with these steps.

1. Remove the wiper arm, this is done with a screwdriver. There is a little clip which simply needs to be pushed down and the wiper arm will come right off.
2. Take a rag with some water and scrub as much of the dust from around the joint as possible.
3. Take penetrating oil of some kind e.g. gun oil, and add as much as reasonably possible to all sides of the joint.
4. Work the joint and periodically add oil until the spring is able to comfortably move the wiper arm by itself.

After the spring is able to move the wiper arm, the wiper will be able to completely wipe the rear windshield.
