My 00 explorer's rear wiper is useless. I put a new wiper on it and it still misses about half the window. Its the first part of the window where it comes up off the body. Is there a adjustment to make or is it the spring in the arm or something? What do I need to do?

mine does the same thing bending the arm helps to a point but the design just plain sucks

Damn it, and I thought the blade was bad. Ugh.

Could be you have a bad arm. Do a search and you can find a post about the correct arm # and a way to fix the present arm.

Ford put out a TSB for that. I don't know what the number for it is but I know that Ford was replacing the spring with a stiffer one to have the wiper put more pressure on the glass to solve the problem.

Mine does it too. I went into the hatch thinking the motor mount had loosened up, was bent, or something. I didn't find any broken or bent items within.

I bent the arm slightly, but it really did not cure the problem. Good to see a better arm might be avail..

I was thinking maybe replacing the blade with one of those "winter" blades might make better contact through out the wiper's range of motion, but haven't tried it as of yet.

I just got a new rear wiper arm from the local merc dealer for $30. It works great now, the spring on the new one is a lot stronger too.

I have an 01' Sport and had the same problem.I replaced the wiper arm and case closed.I paid $12.00 from Ford.Do you use a car wash?I think that is a major contibutor to the problem.

I have a 98 XLT and my rear wiper misses the glass like crazy! Do you think I should go ahead and buy the rear wiper arm from Ford as well?

That should fix your problem. They're very easy to replace. If you have a couple of Ford dealers nearby, give them a call and get a couple of prices.I'm pretty sure I paid about $12

With the old arm on mine, the wiper would only hit half the window. I could live without having a rear wiper, but if its there I might as well make good use of it.

If I would have known other dealers might have them cheaper, I might have called around. But even at $30 I was more then happy to pay it, and the dealer is only 3 miles from my house if that.

Rear wiper skip

Thanks for all this info. My rear wiper has been driving me nuts!! It misses the passenger half of the rear glass completely. I'll call the Ford place tomorrow. If this is a known problem at Ford, it should be repaired at their expense...sounds like a safety hazard to me. Thanks again!

I had the dealer fix my wiper when I went in for some other recall... I think on the seat bolts. They had to replace the wiper arm assembly and the blade assembly. They charged me 47.75 for the arm and tried to charge me $62 for the labor but I made a big deal and the service rep. was pretty cool so she waived that part of the charge. If you have to pay a lot and you don't use your rear wiper you may want to skip this fix. I think it would better to get a rear rain/wind deflector to prevent dirt from accumulating on the window.
