Hi

I have a 2000 mustang with a 7.5 rearend ( 3.27 gear ratio - Failed )

Is it possible to pull the rearend out of my 1992 Explorer ( Needs alot of work to the front end as well as engine work that is to costly ) and do a swap to the mustang without serious modifications

Explorer has an 8.8 rearend ( 3.27 gear ratio ) Also has drum brakes which i think i can get brackets for discs

Hope someone can help

Thanks

Its just been a little over an hour since your first post...give it time someone may know. But, this is probably a question better suited for a Mustang forum.

There are some things you need to look at bere you attempt this swap. I am not very famalier with the 7.5 so i will give you generalized things to look for. First thing to look at and measure is track width. Will it even fit underneath the mustang. What wheel and tire package are you going to use? Take a bunch of measurements to make sure you are not going to hit anything. Second thing to look for is mounting points for the shocks and springs. If you can re-use the mustang mounts then go with those. I doubt the explorer mounts will fit underneath without causing major ground clearance issues.

If all of that fits correctly and can directly bolt up or with little modification then you can move on. Next you need to compare the actual rear ends. the 8.8 pinion mounts on the lower side. Make sure the 7.5 does as well. If the height of the pinion, from the centerline of the axle, is different between the two you will have a different driveshaft angle. In a mustang this shouldn't be much of an issue becuase the suspension travel is not as long.

Finally look at the length of the center section of the differential. Measure the length from the center of the axle housing to the U-Joint connection. If these are different you may be concerned with driveshaft lengths. If anything i would imagine the 8.8 is longer in which case you would need you have your drive shaft shortened.

So how easily will this swap work . . . no idea. Can it be done of course it just depends on how much work you want to do. Good luck but keep us updated whichever you decide

Explorer1992_4.0, if you have a pull a part within driving distance, it'd probably be better/easier to just pull another rear end from another Mustang instead of trying to put one out of an SUV into a Car. Granted it'd probably work, but there might be some things that don't align right like posted above.

Ever thought about just redoing the gears?
