Does anyone know if there are kits available to rebuild your stock alternator? A few years back, I heard you could buy replacing bearings and brushes together in a kit pretty cheap.

Thanks

a new alternator isnt that expensive anyways....

135 for reman over 200 for new 35 for rebuild kit

I just bought a remanufactured alternator from Checker about a week ago for $114. It was a stock Motorcraft alternator, just rebuilt. They had rebuild kits for around $42, but it seems like too much of a hassle to disassemble the alternator, replace the needed parts, and put it back together again.

if its just brushes or bearings then just get those parts and replace it. to rebuild it you have to obviously take it apart and figure out whats wrong. if its a wire or more on the stator you are better off putting it back together and getting a reman unit.

if you know how to diagnose the alternator components and rebuild them then its a cheaper option. but what happens if you rebuild it and 5 miles down the road something else goes wrong inside it? you are out the rebuild kit $ and the time you took to rebuild it.

thats the reason 99.9% of shops will put a reman in cause there is a 12 month/12k mile warranty typically and its cheaper and faster for Mr and Mrs customer than paying for a rebuild with no warranty
