No more hissing noises.
The drive is so much smoother & I dont if its me but the gearbox seems to shift up & down alot smoother too,Is this possible?
Thanks to this club I now have a much much nicer vehicle

That's great!
Enjoy and have fun with it now!

But still keep a close eye on it.
After my M12 I said the same thing. 4K miles later the same problem started, so new cam guides went in ... THEN after another 4K miles later, the engine blew. Rear top timing chain spocket spun. Wrecked the passenger side of engine. The valves "kissed" the pistons....quite hard.

I also thought I had someone else's car when that thing started cranking right!

but give a good hard glance at it once in a while

I gotta get that done when I go back to Orlando on break tomorrow. I'm embarassed to start the thing for the first time each day. I dont trust any of the dealers down here in West Palm Beach at all, wouldnt let them change my air freshener.

Thanks for info....but...
Did you have to tell me all your great news at once ,you could have told me slowly
I will make the most of the next 4K
I hope that running on LPG the motor will last a little longer , The oil doesnt burn when on LPG & I am using fully synthetic oil expensive but worth it

Micheal what do you mean by LPG ?

I just took my 99' X to the Ford garage here for the very recall you all are talking about... and when I walked up to the service desk and announced that I was there for the Recall service, the guy looks at me and says " does this concern you" WTF??? does it concern me??? my $20,000 + truck doesn't stay running in cold weather and he asks me if it concerns me??? what kind of question is that??? jeepers creepers.......

LPG is Liquid Petroleum Gas ,Its a bi-product of petrol (or gas as you call it)
It burns cleaner.... better for the ozone
But the best part is that it half the price...so I get 30mpg not 15 .
Twin tanks where my spare wheel was carry 80 ltrs of LPG costs $30 to fill it and get 230 miles
Installation costs around $2500. but if your keeping a 4.0 ltr car in the uk when a ltr of petrol costs $1.3
Thats @an exchange rate of 1.54$ to the £
I think thats clear

MYDLAND89 Phone ford head office for a claim no , they will ask you some questions on your vehicle & the problem with it.... and thats it , walk up to the service manager with a smug look on your face and tell him your claim no and to phone you when its finished

I tired to be nice and to wish you well..... and hope you never have any more probems.

I was in "Explorer Heaven" too for a while
Just don't let your guard down .... that was not one of Ford's best engines inspite of recalls fixes.

I agree, it's not their best, but its not their worst either... it's a pretty snazzy engine that packs a good punch! If you keep on-top of it and change fluids, pay attention to noises... and maintain it good... it will treat you well.

My x is doing the same thing. When you say hissing noise, can you hear it from inside the x? I can hear a hissing noise in mine from the inside. Ford said the 00m12 was already done on mine. I have had my x to six different places and keep getting differrent diagnosis. They replaced the fuel regulator, o2 sensor and relaced my MAF sensor. I cleaned my IAC myself. I'm broke and ready to drive this thing over a cliff. Anyone have any good cliffs around them?
Mike

My hissing noise was not that loud .
I would spray some leak detector on your pipework.
has it always done this , if not, did you notice anything else happen when it started hissing , eg : poor starting , poor brakes or over heating.
Can you tell where it is comming from
good luck
michael

Michael

Glad it all worked out ok. I still run mine on good ol petrol (gas) and so far very impressed with performance/fuel consumption. I do not expect to get 30+ MPG out of a 4x4. What I do get is a consistant 19.8 mpg (equates to 16.1 USMPG) which is miles better than the 4.6 Range Rover that I used to have (lucky to get 14mpg on a run). All the best.

Howard, get it converted ,you will never look back.
I could get 20 mpg on petrol but it was boring watching the fuel gauge only going one way , coasting down hills to save another 1/2 ltr. Those days are gone for ever
With the aircon on i get 17mpg on gas thats based on my daily drive to work of 60 miles.
I pay 1/2 the cost of petrol (34.9pltr) so for the same price as petrol I get 34mpg ....you cant get much better than that in a 4.0 ltr petrol
By the way after 750 miles the car is still running great
michael

Sounds good. But where have you put your spare? I also heard some not good things about the plastice intake manifold doing nasty things with LPG. I have to say that I'm one of those people that won't convert anything. If it was designed to run LPG then I'll use it or Deisel or Petrol. But thanks for the thought.

My spare is mounted on the tailgate .
I would be interested in any info on the LPG & the plastic inlet manifold , I was not aware of any problems in that department.
The company that converted mine was at the time converting 14 explorers for the west yorkshire police department & when I was picking my vehicle up I spoke to engineer who had converted them and he told me that the ford explorer was one of the best vehicles to convert because of the management system.
P.S ...Running on LPG is also useful when there is a petrol strike
MICHAEL

One of the main reasons that I swapped my Range Rover for the Explorer was space in the rear. I've also got a pet hate about spares hanging on the rear door (cheap nasty looking) not to mention the increased weight on the hinges etc.

I'll do my reseach again and see what I can find out. I'll let you know.

Cheers for now and Merry Christmas to all.:D

I dont mind the spare on the tailgate ,and I dont use the cargo area much , there is nowhere else.
Youve got to watch your head when you hitch the caravan up ,thats the only downside.
I wont be in the office over chrismas so Happy chrismas & a better new year to you & your daughter
michael

The hissing is very faint and I only can hear it from the inside. I can't hear it from the outside the engine is to loud. I don't think it is coming from the brake booster, she stops on a dime. She is at the garage once again this morning, can't wait to hear what it is this time. What leak detector spray are ya talking about? This thing has all the 00m12 systems. Once in a while it sounds like a friggen tractor. Thanks for your reply.

Liquid Petroleum Gas is just another name for Propane is it not?
