Recall 09B11

So I forgot there was a recall, and now I am having issues, and they want to charge me for the recall. Does anyone know what parts I need, and where I can buy them?

I never had the problem either but I was sure to get it replaced in the first 12 months after the recall so it would be free. I now have it sporadically.

Anyway, I think somewhere in this thread someone might have mentioned it was only a $35 or so board which is replaced.

I would think you could ask the dealer what is going to be replaced and just order one.

Upthread in my last post I mentioned the part #. Not sure if the part differs by year, but mine is an '06 XLS. I think they installed the part in the center console/shifter area somewhere.

Hi guys,

I’m sorry to hear you have been experiencing this concern and I’d like to lend a hand to research if your Explorer is under this program. Please send me your VIN in a private message so I can look to see what recalls affect your vehicle. You can also go to www.FordOwner.com > Service > Recall Notices > and input your VIN to see what recalls are on your vehicle.

Hi Cory. If we had the recall performed, having never had the problem before the work was done, what is the warranty period for the new unit and what does that include (parts and/or labor)? I am now intermittently experiencing this problem after the board was replaced.

It’s unfortunate that you’re having the issue again. The warranty period for that repair would be 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever occurs first) parts and labor included, but I recommend taking your Explorer to the dealership to verify it is the same concern.

Hi Cory. I never had the issue before the recall fix was applied. As my issue is very intermittent, I do not think that the dealer will be able to readily duplicate it. If they can not duplicate this, will I be charged for their diagnosis which may not find anything at all?

You’re right; I see that you mentioned you hadn’t had the issue before. I can lend a hand with this if you’d like. Just send me a private message with your VIN, approximate mileage, and dealer name, then I can help!

Hi Cory. Message has been sent with the information you requested. I will keep everyone here updated with how it goes.

For more background, I have the highest Ford extended warranty coverage which is good through about 96k miles and I am currently at around 64k miles. I have used the access port at the bottom of the cup holder whenever it gets stuck.

**** problem ford explorer

I had this problem and eventually gets worse. I got mine fixed under warranty.

so what did they tell you. i have an extended warranty on mine but only covers transmission and motor. did they tell you what it was?

Mine gradually got worse overtime. Where is locked up 1 in 3 times. At the time, I had the ext. premium warranty and it was covered.

I’m not a technician, so I can’t guess at a repair. I recommend taking your Explorer to a Ford dealer for a diagnosis. I’m not certain if there’s anything I can do to help, but if you end up deciding to schedule an appointment, please feel free to PM me with your contact info, mileage, and dealer name. I’ll see if there’s anything I can do to make the process a bit smoother.

Though this problem had developed after the recall fix and never occurred before, it has cleared up on its own and not happened in a good 2 months *knock on wood*.

Mine is intermittent as well. I can go weeks without an issue then have issues everyday for a week then no issues. I brought it to Ford and they found that the shifter mechanism wasn't covered under my warranty and wanted me to pay $500 some odd dollars, so I just drove away. It does get frustrating when the damn thing refuses to come out of park, I must look like an idiot wrestling with the damn thing to get it out of park.

It's simple to access through the cup holder. I'd go for the rest of the life of the vehicle before I'd pay $500 or so for it.

Did the dealer make you pay for that diagnosis? Should have included what part they were changing. Somewhere in this thread it was listed at only around $30-50 for the part itself and a simple job to change.

Yeah, they made me pay the diagnosis fee. They wanted to replace the entire shifter mechanism and quoted me something around $250 for the part. I was going to try and replace that actuator thingy that was mentioned earlier in this post, but am not quite sure what the part number is so that I don't order the wrong part.

I have finally worked my way down to only 2 remaining issues with my truck. My extended warranty has already paid for itself and then some.

Looks like you have the V6 and I believe this is only for the V8. So I suppose anything could be the problem.
