Recomendations on generation to purchase

I am a new member from Western Canada.

I was looking at a 2002 Limited which I ended up missing out on.

Now I am forced to start the search again.

The 2002 was at my limit pricewise, what is your recomendations on the previous generations and what are the differences?

It has to be 4x4 (preferably auto 4x4), loaded, and V8.

Is there reasons to pick one generation over another? and what are the reasons.

I have not had a lot to do with Explorers, however have been a Mustang owner for quite a few years.

I loved the way the 2002 was laid out and the options it had.

I had asked specifically about the 2002 in the year specific forum, and received a lot of valuable information about that vehicle.

I posted this question here since there does not seem to be a "general" forum which bridges the gap between the generations

If you plan on buying the truck strickly for the road, a third gen is probably a better choice. I have a second and third gen for comparison. If however, you want to set it up as a part time offroader or plan to do things such as a lift, larger tires, etc. then you would want to go with a second gen.
