Looking for a good code reader primarily for my '97 Explorer (OBDII).

I recall seeing some info around here recently, but I can't seem to locate it.

I understand the less expensive units might not read transmission related codes, or manufacturer specific codes. I want that additional info. I'd also like to read out sensor data in real-time. If it would also work with an '02 E46 BMW that would be a plus. I don't need OBDI compatibility. USB computer interface is an additional plus.

Any recommendations that fit my needs, or ones to stay away from?

Thanks.

The one 2000LXS put a link to, a friend of mine has and has read codes right everytime I used it on my ex once or twice and used on other vehicles.

The one that 2000LXS linked to was the one that AutoZone used to read my codes last weekend. Looks pretty straightforward, planning on buying one myself as soon as i have the cash.

anybody know if these are any good?

ebay link

I'm interested in how it can read signals on the fly since I got a PDA they say will work for free

I have this:

http://obd-2.com/

It can read Ford Extended codes along with ABS and some body computers.

Be sure to get at least PWM+ISO for the Explorer. If you have other vehicles you may want to pick the TriCAN option for $240. That will cover everything till 2010 and beyond.

Many code readers can only read/stream 10 OBD-II parameters, making them useless for some diagnostic work.

There are over 1000 extended ford parameters! Most cars use a subset of a few hundred, and they can be important to track down difficult issues.

The elm interface / cable is basically available from many people (including ebay). Its relatively cheap (<$40) and works with most / any computer (via usb / serial). There is some freeware around that gives you basic "stuff" (sub sets of live data, freeze data, etc) and of course you can then also buy some software packages to get lots of things.
