I have seen pics of PIU with regular rims (mostly aftermarket) so I thought it was an easy swap. I saw a post about a guy who wanted to do just that but had problems because of the cop car brakes were too big. Would I have problems getting stock rims from a same year Explorer? If so, can I go aftermarket? Thanks.

i want to say the PIUs had upgraded brakes so presumably big brakes from the factory. i think some would fit some wouldnt. if the rim has identical specs to the cop one i think it would ie offset etc. as with the stock X rims aftermarket would have to match or be better than the stockers. does the PIU have a different diameter than civilian?

As far as I know, the Interceptor SUV uses an 18" wheel and the retail units use anywhere from 18" to 20". I don't see what an OEM 20" wheel would not fit. FYI, a member with a 2020 Explorer with 20" wheels bought a set of 2020 steel 18" Interceptor wheels for his winter set-up.
The thing you want to be careful with is the diameter of the new wheel/tire combination. The maximum diameter variance should not exceed 3% of the OEM size. Part way through the 2013 model production the Explorer was fitted with the same HD brakes as the PIU.

Thank you both for the info. I didn't know about the Explorer after 2013. I have a 2016 with 18" steel rims and I want to change them for 2016 regular Explorer rims. If they have the same brakes after 2013 I should be fine. Thanks again.
