I just bought a 1996 Explorer which didnt come with a remote entry. I bought one and decided to program it myself. I got the instructions from the seller and I am having difficulty getting it to work. Does anyone know if there is a switch that I need to push or have any other suggestions to help me out here.. i didnt want to end up wasting money on this remote. thank you all

How are you trying to program it? By cycling the ignition?

yea.. it says to go from off to run 5 times within 10 seconds ending on run. and the locks are supposed to cycle.. but when i do this, nothing happens

I think it's 10 times for a 91-97. Then it went to 8 times for 98-01. Try it doing 10.

But maybe it's 5. Are you sure it's equipped with keyless entry?

ok, ill try it in the a.m. if that doesnt work, do u have any other suggestions? is there a switch or anything i need to play around with?

it should be. i honestly dont know, and I should have found out, but it does have automatic locks

You're right. It's 5 times.

programming a 95/96/97

cycle iginition from off to run 5 times within 10 sec, ending in run, all doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode, press any button on the 1st remote transmitter. door locks will cycle(lock then unlock) to confirm programming. to program additional remotes - press any button on the next remote(upto 4 total possible) locks will cycle again. turn iginition off. locks will again cycle to indicate the end of the programming mode.

programming a 98/99/00/01

same as above - but cycle iginition off to run 8 times within 10 seconds

If you're cycling it and the locks are not automatically working after the 5th cycle, chances are you don't have keyless entry. Good luck! :D

dammit.. thanks buddy. ill fiddle with it tomorrow.. take it easy

is there another item i might need to buy, like a transmitter or whatever??

Actually, I had a similar problem when I first acquired our 97 Eddie Bauer this past Fall.

If you have power locks, and you can see a red "theft" light come on in your dash after you turn the ignition off, then your EX should be wired for remote keyless entry.

When I bought the remotes for our EX off of ebay, the ones I got have two black buttons at the top and one orange "panic" button beneath. If the remote you bought has more buttons than this, it might not be the right remote and may not work.

One of the remotes I recieved did not do anything when I tried to program it. I turned the ignition from off to on 5 times within 10 seconds, leaving it in the "on" position on the fifth time, and the locks all cycled (locked or unlocked, I can't remember), but then when I pressed the buttons on the remote, nothing happened.

Turns out that the battery for the remote didn't work. So I went to Batteries Plus, spent $3 for a new battery, and tried again. Everything worked fine, and that is the remote I use now.

I'd check to make sure that the battery is installed correctly and then if it still doesn't work, go get areplacement and try again.

Hope this helps.

P.S. If you have more than one remote, make sure you program all of them at the same time (do the ignition switch thing, listen for the locks to cycle, press any button on the first remote, the locks will cycle, then press any button on the next remote, the locks will cycle again. I think you can have a maximum of 3 (4?) remotes).

I just got a 99. What exactly do you mean "cycling the ignition"? I don't want to screw it up!
Thanks.
