I have a 200 XLT with PATS and Im trying to install a remote start soon.

Where is the best location to tap into the tach wire?

And to ''bypass'' the PATS,do I simply place a programed 2nd key somewhere under the dash?

Hey CJL,

The best place for the tach sense is at the PCM. I know the wire color is T/Y(tan/yellow) but I don't remember the pin #. The wiring diagram from the remote start manufacturer should tell you that. For the PATS you'll need a bypass module. You put a programmed key in the bypass module and place the module somewhere under the dash. If you have 2 keys already you can just buy the key and program it yourself. If not the dealer, or a locksmith must do it. For piece of mind, once it's programed you can cut part of the key shaft off to render it unusable before it goes in the bypass.

Check with your insurance if you can leave a programmed key in the module, I would rather buy the new style module that does not require a key to be left inside the vehicle. The module itself "acts" like a 3rd key, so you program it using the 2 original keys

i would also use the modules that require no key to be hidden in the vehicle.

However for the tach there are many places to locate it also. First off depending on the remote start you plan to use some have whats called "voltage sense" and you dont need to hok a tach up. I personally like to use the fuel injector. All injectors have 2 wires going into them. 1 of the wires is a common color across (6 or 8 depending on your motor). any of the "NON-common" colors work

You can also get away without using the module by cutting the key part off of the programmed key and simply placing the head of the key (the black plastic part with the microchip) into the steering column above the ignition. Works fine and a theif cant use a hidden key to start your truck.

This can also be done if someone only has one key. Make as many key copies as you want, then use the single module in the steering column.

That would defeat the purpose of PATS and per my insurance company, they will not pay in case of theft

The bypass modules that don't require a key are no more secure than than a module that does if you render the key useless. All bypass modules, programmable or key based only require a trigger to active them. If a car thief wants your car bad enough, and they can find the bypass, they only need to know how to trigger it to defeat PATS. And if a professional thief wants it there is plenty of technology out there(transponder cloning, etc.) to make it easy. Pats is not foolproof. It provides only a little more than an aftermarket alarm does. Don't get me wrong, as factory security goes it's pretty good. The average car thief's job is no easier if the car has a remote start with a bypass module than if it doesn't. Here in Jersey we have some of the highest insurance in the country because of car theft rates up north, and I have never had any of the major companies I've dealt with tell that I'm not covered because of my remote start bypass. That being said I don't want to steer anybody wrong, so I agree with jad2411 putting a key, cut or not in your steering column is not a good idea. Outright defeating the factory security that way could cause them not to pay. But check with your insurance co. about the remote start. That's just my .02

For the tach wire, there is easier way to get the wire i need other than running the wire into the engine bay?

As for remote start, I only have one copy of my key. I was trying to go the cheapest route by just buying a blank, getting it programed it and then tape it to the steering column.

But it looks like I would have to buy a blank, get it programed, buy another blank program it myself and then buy module,or buy keyless unit which is prolly more expensive.

This info is for a 2000 Explorer, 4D SUV, 4.0 with standard audio system.

Use the info at your own risk...

Tachometer
Color TAN/YELLOW
Polarity (-)
Location PCM PIN 48 OR COIL TOP OF MOTOR TAN/WHT

i also see back of the instrument cluster (same color), however tach wires are not a neg polarity. infact they are ac voltage.

You can not just tape a key to the column. the truck will not start it 2 keys are present at once (and can actually drop the keys from its memory), then you will have to have them all reprogrammed again.

Look into the Idatalink modules. they have a module that you can "clone" the key. with this you only need 1 key (no need to get any more made). however you will have to have an authorized shop do this for you it requires programming.

on a side note i have seen keys cut and programmed from anywhere from about 50 to 100 per key (dealers or locksmiths)

Ok I bought a bypass unit now Im trying to figure out how to install it.

Where is the PATS module or the wires i need to install this located at?

What type of bypass did you get? The PCM is where you need to tap into to disable the PATS for remote start.
