Was it really that easy? I have been thinking about doing one on my X also, I have a 2001 Eddie Bauer. I would think the process would be pretty similar. Mind posting the instructions or the write up on how you did it? Thanks!

thats a good price for a remote starter

which starter part numbers module numbers.. for that price I want it

i am in indiana over the holiday this week but once i get back home to minnesota i will do a write up and post part numbers and all of that good stuff.

yes it really was that easy. but it also helps that i work in a shop and have access to wiring diagrams free of charge to me. autozone sells the remote starter that i have, ( but cause i work in a shop and things at cost i got it so cheap.) note: i have pats but i did not use the bypass module. i cut off the part of the key that goes in to the ignition cylinder. and electrical taped ther black part of my key with the chip in it to the p.a.t.s. pick up antenna. if you open your steering steering column the will/ should be a black plastic ring around it that is the "antenna" that i glued and taped my chip too. i will do a thorough write up once i get back home.

So would that not make your truck easier to steal and hotwire??? I'd rather get the bypass module my dad has a shop I get corporate discount as well

no. if you install the remote starter right u have to hook up a brake switch. which kills the motor if u press the brake while it is in remote start. the way i did it is like using the bypass module but without using it. if u put the steering column back together to where it looks factory no one will be anywiser that you have the chip on the "pick up antenna" for the remote starter to work. u cant tell by looking at mine that i dont have the bypass module. the only one on the road that knows i dont have it is me.

whats your key look like now? and what about if I did some kind of a push start... I have always dreamed of making my truck something nobody else can start but me... u kno.. something like those old high beam push buttons on the floor where you turn the key on and then have to push that to start it... that would be cool... maybe I could use that chip idea to do that and do the remote start thing as well

Wheels are turnin here smokes pourin out

i cut off everything that isnt black on mine, i will post a pick when i get back home and to my camera.. i cut off the part that goes into to ignition cylinder.
the push button on the floor would be cool. but i think it would be real tricky. i know what u mean. i dont want anyone else to be able to start my truck either. i have thought about trying to make mine like those new hybrids where they are a push button start and you have to have the key fob in the car to start them.
that would be awesome.

No, the way you did it was to permanently bypass the PATS system instead of temporarily bypassing the PATS only when the remote start is operating.

Well... you and ten thousand of your closest ExplorerForum friends anyways...

Doing this PERMANENTLY bypasses the PATS. That means anyone could easily hot-wire your vehicle, or punch the ignition lock and start it with a screwdriver. That defeats the entire purpose of having the PATS on it to start with.

You did not get away with doing something ingenious, you did it the *wrong* way. Use the bypass module. It's what allows the PATS system to continue to work properly when the remote start isn't being used.

I gotta admit after reading his thats what I was getting at.. It would make it as simple as stealing my old 93 heap. I think I'm gonna get the bypass.. Now... about that push start.. Is there a way you had to put the key in.. turn it on.. and then PUSH a button rather then turn key forward to start it??? joe seems as though he'd know.. still.. good job on the instal hopefully nobody steals your rig :)

Just need to splice the pushbutton starter in-line with the wire from the ignition switch. Don't have that info in front of me offhand, but it's somewhere on the site... A couple people did it a few years back.

Ok These chilly pa mornings are annoying my truck... I got some ideas on my remote start maybe 1 weekend I'll just do both in the same time while i'm into it.. because i HATE electical.. Its not difficult its just you have to take your time and get everything done not working.. correct.. so it stays working.. and SAFE i'll use the ... shhh. SEARCH button. thanks joe

just an added note if anyone needs a wiring diagram they can go here and get it for free it has all the wire locations and colors and what goes where along with notes about door locks and so forth this is where i get my infor for all of my remote start and alarm installs. www.bulldogsecurity.com

Would defintley love to see someone do the push button just cause it would look good. But check your laws cause I do know in TN if it is a road driven vehicle then the push to start is illegal. But i would still do it.

WHAT??? Seriously?? What do they do about the older vehicles still on the road that start that way from the factory? Or what about the new vehicles that you don't really have a key...just a transmitter that doesn't leave your pocket and you push a button to start? Something tells me something isn't being interpreted correctly there... Then again, it is the home of the inventor of the internet... :D

Ditto... Care to cite a source for that one?

Hes probably thinking of the derby car setup.. 1 hot wire straight to the starter... due to it being unsafe a child could push the button.. Its impossible an installed push button be illegal? Insp states the vehicle must run and all factory equipped electricals work.. IE horn wipers washer pump lights fog cut off with high etc... Thats like saying a universal horn button is illegal
