Ok, I am in the process of installing a JVC head unit into the 94 X (has premium audio) but plan on buying an amp-bypass harness. The car already had an aftermarket stereo with the correct adapter so I just cut it from the old HU and wanted to solder it onto the new harness. The problem is, from what I could tell, it was using the remote turn on lead for the factory amp. I planned on using that for the JBL amp so should I even think about connecting it back together or would I be safe not to. Thanks!

huh? the jbl system and the premium aidio have different amps.. they are not the same... if you intend to be able to listen to anything, you need to connect the remote turn on lead for the factiry amp, or get the factory bypass harness.... you dont have to use the turn on lead, unless your amp requires one...

I should have said that I plan on installing a JBL BP600.1 for a subwoofer. My real question is, on the factory harness, does the factory amp need a remote turn on lead from the harness or does it get the power elsewhere because I find it strange for a factory headunit to have a remote turn on lead.

The factory amp does use a remote lead. If you don't bypass the factory amp, and connect your new lead directly to the harness and leave the stock lead disconnected, you won't get any sound from your speakers (only your sub).

Do you want to keep the factory amp for now (temporary, until you get the bypass kit), and go ahead and install the jbl amp for your sub?

If that's what you're wanting to do, then just cut out a small section of wire shield (less than 1") from the factory amp lead, and tap the new amp lead into there. Twist it around a few times, make sure it's getting a good connection, and wrap it up with electrical tape.

That's how I did mine, and it worked fine for 6 months or so (until I finally bypassed the factory amp).. I don't think there should be any problems with it.

Here's a rough diagram of what I did, hopefully it makes sense.
