The Haynes manuals in both the 1991-1992 and 1991-1995 versions do not list removal of that exhaust crossover as a required (or even suggested) step prior to removing the A4LD.

However, I've read many times on this list that removal of that ex. pipe (the section with the O2 sensor) is part of the A4LD removal process.

Is that a "required" step or is that a "this makes things much easier" step?

This is my rule of thumb if you can do it without having to remove it then dont but the manuals are always going to take you through steps that dont need to be done(in my experience) i have a 95 with the 4r55e and the only thing i removed was the cat on the passenger side and that gave me some room and when you lower the motor the exhaust will lower with it. It is a pita to get it to clear but it can be done.

Those manuals show pictures of a lot of repairs, but not all of them apply to all models. Some people here have posted that the manual may show a picture of the battery on the driver's side when on their vehicle it may be on the passenger's side. Compare the information to another manual, like the Chilton's to see if they say the same thing. On my vans, it's not necessary to disconnect the exhaust for any transmission work.

By the time you read this thread you could have your Y pipe off.
YES remove it, you will actually save yourself time by removing the Y pipe, ESPECIALLY when you go to stab the trans back in.

Short cuts typically are not short cuts at all.

I have pulled many a A4LD and 5 speed from behind a 4.0L, the Y pipe gets dropped each and every time.

I agree, it makes it much easier. I wouldn't even attemp to remove the trans with the downpipe in place. Just make sure you soak all the exhaust hardware in PB Plaster so you can get it apart in one piece

my truck is body lifted so i had no problem, but when i did remove the manaul trans from the junkyard explorer, i had to cut the pipe with a hacksaw :fire: and i did everything i could including trying to unbolt the pipe before cutting. oh well it got me the tranny i needed.

I'm surprised the junk yards where you live let you pull out a transmission in their lot. The ones where I live don't let you pull stuff off. Many years ago, they let you walk around in there, and pull stuff out. I think it might be due to insurance regulations, and that the workers were selling parts privately, and pocketing the money.
