Slide the bar to free up access to the screws holding down the brackets., unscrew and remove.

what about the plastic pieces in the middle of the roof that look like they're pop riveted on?

That's a whole lot more work... Drill, fill, paint... Are you customizing?

Yea i guess you could say that. I Just wanted to know what it would take to get it done soon so i can scuff and prime it for paint in the near future. do you know If theres anybody on here thats done this or of any build/how to threads or any specific knowledge of how to do it?

Not right off hand. Lots remove the crossbars and side rails, but not the center rub rails. IIRC, a few people have used a (I think) Chevy Tahoe roof rack delete kit to cover the inserts left by removing the side bars. (They stick up above the sheet metal under the rails)

I'll will be doing my '97 (same roof and rack) within the next month or so. I'll be welding up all the mounting holes and eliminating all the grooves in the roof at the same time.

But if you dont want to do all that work you can do what I did the last time i painted mine, I just removed the cross bars, left the all the lengthwise ones and painted the plastic ones body color. Still looked 10x better
