The vehicle is an 02 Ranger 4.0 4x4 with the 5r55e. I had been getting the flashing OD light, no engine braking, and sluggish shifting. Sounded just like the symptoms of the TSB. I removed my VB tonight and heres what I found and a few questions below.

1. After removing the trans filter I found a small o-ring in the pan I was letting the fluid drip in. I dont know where it cam from. Was it off the filter? Its about an inch across.

2. I was expecting the blown out gasket to be bad. All I saw was the place over by the servo and the torn out place on at the top to the right. Would just this little bit cause they symptoms I described? I checked the solenoids and all were within spec.

3. The t-30 spereator plate bolt to top and right as I took the pic was less than hand tight. Would this cause an issue?

I appreciate any input and thanks in advance for the help.

The O ring might have fallen off of the filter. Check to see if the filter has 2 O rings. You could clean everything up, and possibly install a shift correction kit. What was the code which came up? How many miles do you have? You might have to install a new EPC solenoid if you have high mileage.

im 99% sure that o ring is off of the filter.

I know I should have checked the codes before I started this, but I didnt. I only have around 55k miles and the epc tested right at 5 ohms. I guess I will go ahead and order the ford tsb parts along with the bonded sep. plate and see if that fixes my problem.

Well, I have some potentially bad news. I went to ford today to order the parts. They had to order the sep. plate and solenoid bracket, but had the tsb kit. Well I go to remove what I thought was going to be a plug, but it's a valve just like the one I bought today! Only difference is that it doesnt have the dimple. By the way my truck is an 02 built in Nov. 01. If it was like this from the factory, wouldnt it have the bonded sep. plate gasket? I guess it could be one that didnt have the bonded gasket. So how to I tell if my sep. plate is the newest version? This is really dissapointing to me because I was really hoping this would be the fix to my transmission.
