I've loosed the u-joint & front end of front drive shaft of 1998 XLT AWD. Back end of front drive shaft will only pull about an inch out of transfer case. Do I have to remove something holding it in? If not, how do I get it out? Have twisted, pulled, even let vehicle roll a little to change positions.

HELP!

The CV at the transfer case

There are (I think) six bolts that hold the CV onto the transfer case. There is an outside sheet metal cover, a steel block and a flange that is mounted to the transfer case. Remove the bolts. Take a chisel at an angle and hit it lightly with a hammer away from the transfer case. The center section must be removed with the drive shaft. If you pull the shaft out of the center section, well, it just gets ugly. The center section fits in an indentation in the transfer case flange and just needs some encouragement to come out.

Removing front drive shaft

Thanks. Worked just like you said! And eliminated the slipping problem I was having!

Now, can I rebuild the front WD part of the transfer case without replacing the whole case? Or do I have to get a whole new (or used) transfer case? Until then, I'll settle for rear wheel drive -- happily!

Thanks again.

The dealership can install a new clutch. They had to put one in mine.
