Well,

As an inexpensive "mod", I started by taking off a small piece of side molding. As I've seen ex's on this board that look great without it.

I have a black 93 ex sport.

When I cleaned the area off, I realized the paint job on the door is two-tone..
As in, top half of the truck is gloss, while the bottom half is flat black.

The side molding was covering up the transition from gloss black to flat black...

Without the side molding peice, the 'transition' from gloss to flat is pritty
obvious.

So: If I want to take off the side molding, do I have to repaint basically the truck??? That wasn't in my "plan"...

Did anyone else have this 'issue' when taking their side molding off & how did you deal with it?

Thanks,
PJ

i have a 93 sport too but mine is dark green. I still have my side molding on, but mine too has that flat black color under it. You said you didn't plan on painting the whole thing. I didn't have any plans of painting my x soon but being a 93, it had terrible paint on the roof. So I just put primer on it. Then I got into a wreck and we I decided to paint the whole thing. I dno't know if there are any Sprayglow shops near you but they painted mine and did all of the body work for only $550!! It wasn't a cheap, half a$$ paint job either. It turned out to look really good. You might want to consider getting it painted if it isn't too much and if your roof's paint was anything like mine.

Is there holes behind the side molding on the 91-94?

I would just put the moulding back on until having the truck painted is in your plan/budget.

West-PAC, there are no holes behind the side moldign o nthe 91-94's nor any explorer that i know of...

Yeah - no holes under the side molding (on 93 sport), but a pain to get all the adhesive off.

I ended up taking the side moldings off, sanded the pain "line" between the black upper half and dark grey lower half, and painted the lower have with black rattle can paint...

The result is actually great. You really can't tell and getting rid of those side moldings 'reduces' its age (in looks anyways)!

I'd recommend taking them off if you have some time to work on it... :)
