Replace Engine?

Interesting. I can't believe you found an engine so cheap! The lowest prices I'm seeing are over $1200, and that's for high mileage (100K and up). To get closer to 90K, it's more like $1750.

I did find a 2008 engine assembly from a 4x4 Explorer, but it didn't cross-link back to a 2004.

The interchange will not list it as fitting because the wiring harness exhaust ect is not the same. Look for a 06-10 V6 Mustang, 07-11 ranger, 07-10 explorer/mountaineer. I have found Mustang engines to be cheapest/most available.

Well, it's sort of a moot point now. The Jasper engine is at the shop. Truck still hasn't moved, so he clearly didn't check out the tranny first (I should have been more explicit and had him at least drop the tranny pan and look for issues).

I chatted with the mechanic who usually works on my truck (former Ford mechanic), and he made lots of painful faces at the idea of trying this in a home garage as a weekend warrior.

Looks like I'll be owning this truck forever now!

Thanks for all of the advice guys.

Had dinner and some beers with my dad on Saturday, he reminded me that he had done an engine swap on a van when I was a teenager, with some guidance from my uncle who was a mechanic. Wish I had remembered that! I definitely would have had much more confidence to do this myself...

Got it back, just shy of $6k. Several new parts. Pretty nuts for a 2004 with over 190,000 miles. It runs great.

I knew I jynxed myself...

Sputtering at around 1200 RPM (slight pressure on accelerator, at cruising speeds), Service Engine light flashed, then went off. Happened again shortly later. Other sputtering without the lights. Back to the garage, throwing a misfire code for Cylinder #1 ...

Really, really not happy with this situation...

Codes were P0301 and P0174.

Local shop had no ideas, took it to the dealer who threw carb cleaner at the intake and guested at manifold gaskets and possibly injector o-rings...

Back to the shop, I insisted on a smoke test, EGR valve was found to be leaking.

Seems better now, more discussion here: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=419143

Thanks for all the support, guys.

Demand smoke testing!!!
