I want to upgrade the speakers in a 1992 EB 4dr Explorer. Currently everything is stock. I'm thinking about an in dash AM/FM cd player with a 4channel output of about 25 watts each and some decent speakers on about $600 budget. All replies appreciated. Obviously I do not need the killer soundoff contest system, just slighly nicer than stock system.

Make sure that your Explorer doesn't already have the very common stock amp in it already. I think if it has the toggle switch, it already has the amp. If it has a dial volume, then it doesn't. This will help you make a decision. In fact, if it does have tha amp, then you don't even have to worry about getting a powerful radio. That leaves you with plenty of options as to what kind of CD player you want without breaking the bank.

600 dollars is plenty to do a basic upgrade. Try just doing the speakers first, this is THE absolute most noticable difference you will encounter. Heck you could just change the fronts and get away with it if you wanted. No use getting a CD player with better signal if your speakers are still old and junky. Then you'd have 500 dollars still, plenty enough to get a basic head unit, and maybe even a stealth subwoofer. I don't know how much the amped one is. Look for an MTX dealer, like Crutchfield.

Just to let you know, when I bought my truck w/ 79k mi. it had the CD player with the dial volume w/ the JBL premium system, the 2 amps, and the sub. No toggle volume. Good luck.

I bought my Sony CDXC60, Infinity 5.25 Referance Series component set, and Infinity 5 by 7s for under $600 and it sounds great. I ordered it all from crutchfield, and they included installation instructions and all of the necessary hardware. Call them at 18009553000.
