'Replaced tail light but brake light won't illuminate

I noticed that my left brake light wasn't working so I bought a replacement lamp. The new lamp burned when the lights were turned on but still did not work when the brakes were applied. So I went to a Ford dealer to be sure I got the right bulb (first purchased at Autozone) and have the same problem.

The tail light will work but the other filament does not recognize that the brakes are being applied.

Any ideas?

sounds like a wiring problem, check under the back where the wiring comes down the frame for a broken wire,
