2006 Explorer V8 Auto O/D off won't illuminate

2006 Ford Explorer - Eddie Bauer V8 Automatic wit 48,700 mi. The O/D Off light will not illuminate when I turn the ignition switch to "on. " The truck will not shift out of O/D (and the light will not illuminate) while underway, either. The truck shifts smoothly and properly, up and down, through all gears. Does anybody have an idea why this is happening? The truck is new to me, and I don't know how well the previous owner cared for it.

The Button on the shifter was missing on mine. Noticed it before I bought it from the dealership. They replaced the assembly, not just the button.
Not a quick cheap fix, if that's the issue.

Solution: The gear shift circuit board was faulty. There was a recall but the previous owner did not take advantage of it, so this was an out-of pocket expense. All is well now, though. Great Truck!
