I've got an '05 limited Ex and it has the Audiophile Sound System.
It sound like there is a subwoofer somewhere in the back and I wanted to see if anyone out knows where this subwoffer is at and if anyone has replaced it with something bigger and better?

There is only a 6.5 inch Sub in the back, everybody I know replaces it with
a 10 inch sub and a better amp. I can not believe anyone that has the "Premium Sound System" in an Explorer, can't locate the "Sub Woofer"...
Just open the back up it's right there.

When you say taht it is back there, is under a panel somewhere or should this sub be right in front of me. I have looked under the "secret compartments" and I could not see it. Call me blind but I cannot see it.

Location

Open the rear lift-gate. It's just behind the rear, passenger-side wheelwell. Pull the panel off and you'll see it. If you've just got a hole with somesort of string to hold stuff still, you don't have a sub. Good luck.

ive looked at a JL 6W0 there nice but im just going to get 2 12in subs

Thanks for responding to my post. I have yet to pull the back panels. Do I need a special tool to remove the panel? Or is this the typical snap-in plastic panels?

If you just want to see the sub, work your way around the panel with a flat-head...it should pop out, but there are little clips all the way around it to hold it in place. If you want to remove it or see everything about it, you have to pull up the carpet, and then pull back the whole wall. Much more involved and it'll really help if you have a panel popper. I've got one for $25 if you want it. Just let me know and good luck.

you can put an 8in sub in the stock box but a ten in would require cutting for sure

Any mods needed to the stock sub box for the 8 inch to fit the 6.5 inch hole ?
