OK...My hood was not staying up, so I got replacement lift supports. (Sach's Stabilus Brand)

Only thing is, they wont fit unless they are cylinder up & sliding shaft down. (Which is backwards from the ones that were on) I searched & read all the topics here & saw a few different theories on this. One said that is the best way to put them because it keeps the seal lubricated & others say that is backwards & it will leak!

Need a bit of help on this one please.

Thanks!

I think its typical for gas lift supports to be mounted with the gas cylinder up. I think that any oil would then collect at the seal and lubricate it (which you want).

Maybe that is why your old ones need to be replaced? ;)

Thanks...I bought the SUV used & that is the way there were on when I bought it so....

Will install em now!

Thanks again!:D

It's six of one, half-dozen of the other. I just replaced mine with some StrongArm brand struts a few weeks ago. They, too, mounted with the cylinder side on the hood. However, they will also only go on one and only one way: The mounting stud is larger on one end than the other to prevent installing them backwards. Somebody wants them that way for a reason, apparently.

I just have to ask...

alright, i was embarrassed to ask this, but the left shock on the liftgate window just smells like rotten milk... it works fine, but have you heard of this before?

I replaced the hood shocks on my 96X a year and half ago, bought replacements from Pep Boys, about 25 bucks apiece. They too were made to mount opposite of the way they were from the factory, would mount one way only. Now, year and half later, they both are so weak, won't hold my hood up. This time I will get better ones from someplace else...I'm not sure what brand I bought at Pep Boys, I'll have to check.
