Just got my hands on a 93 eddie bauer automatic for 550$. Pretty sweet deal. Any way I need a new ac compressor and was wondering how to take it out from another ford at the junk yard and then place the new one in my ford.
That is my plan too. Mine has Black Death. Look it up if you don't know what it is. Verify this isn't whats wrong with yours. If it is you'll need more then just the Compressor.
No,you have to discharge the system to replace the compressor. If it blew up it put aluminum and what not all thru the system and you are looking at a lot of work to try and clean it out.
Have the system discharged and take the line off the compressor,it it is full of gray gunk and aluminum it will need to be cleaned and some parts replaced.
if the compressor blow up and the line is full of junk best bet is to replace the orifice tube, condenser, evaporator and dryer with new parts as you do not want any stray peaces floating around in your new rebuilt system ready to also take it out. None of them are that expensive any way and if you can spring for new lines also being R134 is a smaller molecule and will leak threw R12 lines so you have to recharge it a bit almost yearly or at lest every two years. If not replacing your lines then by all means flush yours out and change all the O rings to the green ones. You also want to remove any traces of the R12 oils as when you recharge it you most likely will be doing a R134 retro fit also. If that is the case make sure the compressor is one that is okay for the higher R134 pressures. Also it would not hurt your comfort to use a larger condenser being R134 is not as good as R12 was and it can use the extra time to change from liquid to gas and cool down time.
just my opinion from retrofitting mine and not doing it all the right way and fighting it every summer here in 105 plus weather were in town is almost called no air because of the stock condenser. So learn form my mistake or you’re bound to repeat it and curse your self later as I do.
Last note at lest here in Calif. There getting closer to stopping home AC work as now you have to also buy a new adapter for there new self sealing cans as the old piercing cans are no more here so to use your gauges and there hook up you get to buy this new plastic adapter for the new cans. GRRRRR in a few years I bet they get there way and fully stop all shade tree mechanics from doing any AC work that involves charge or discharging an AC system.
