I am looking to replace the stereo in my 05 explorer and was wondering how exactly i can get the plate off around the stereo and the climate control knobs. Is there a special way to snap this piece off ?

Yes, pull off your a/c knobs and up under the overhang just above them there are two bolts, remove these then the whole peice pops out.

cfh4life,
Stereo replacement in the explorer is very easy especially if you have a harness. You do not have to removed the knobs at all. All you need to do is pry around the edge of the black bevel around the radio (where the 4x4 buttons). I used a butter knife to do this as not to dmg the dash. I would start in the bottom left corner of the bevel and work your way around.

Perhaps I was wrong, but you may still want to check for bolts before you break something! Im not sure about your vehicle but there were bolts in my 01 sport and my bros 01 ranger.
