Replacing engine

Alright first off im new to the boards. Been looking for a good Ford Explorer site to get tips off and stuff, and found this one.

I bought a 1993 Ford Explorer from a car auction for 2k canadian. Truck looks alright except its leaking coolant into the oil and makes a crap load of smoke and it wont heat up inside. Also the sun roof is leaking a little.

Now I went to a mechanic shop and they said I could basicly replace a block or just buy another engine and they would warranty it for a year. They said better to do it that way incase anythign else is wrong with the engine I could just bring it back to them.

I am wondering what suggestions you guys have to offer on this scenario.If you guys know of a better engine that could go in the truck instead of the standard 4.0 that came with that year please tell, im looking for a bit more performance than the 93 explorer offers, that is if I can afford it and its accessible. Also I don't know much about Explorers, I use to have an expedition 97 but now its my parents. Most of my auto knowledge lies in cars.

Oh yeah and also, any idea how much it would cost to fix up that sun roof?

Pull a 5.0 liter v8 out of a wrecked X... If you get a really good deal you could get it for 5 - 800

i'd look for a v8 out of a 88-93 Mustang and drop it in. those engines are all over the place. and they've got more balls than those X v8's.

Depending on your budget, get a Jasper engine, they have a 75,000 3 year warranty and they do honnor it very well.

I have had mine for about a year now and except for a few minor problems, which were covered under warranty, I love the engine. I hope it last 140,000 like the ford motor did.

Carl, your ford engine only made it 140k??? did it die or did you just replace it?

It died. The previous owner had really abused the vehicle and engine. I have several friends that have taken care of their "X" and have close to 170, 000 miles on the original engine.

I picked up my "X" at avery good price knowing that it had been abused.

Stickwith the 4L. It will cost more than your willing to pay to upgrade to a V8. Have a used engine installed and add new exhaust, K&N, and a Chip.:redexp:

Thanks for all the advice guys I appreciate it. I'm going to look into all the pricing for each suggestion and see how my wallet handles it.
