I've done a search and I haven't found to much on the topic. I also have the Ford factory manual, but I was wondering from someone who has done this how difficult it is. It meantions messing with the preload and stuff, not something I want to really get into. Any tips or things to watch out for, tricks. Thanks.

I tried doing this on my Explorer, however I don't have air so I couldn't do it.

The procedure I was going to do in which I had done at a local shop was to mark the nut in relation to the pinion with a centre punch. Remove the nut and whatever you have to and then remove and replace the seal. Put everything back together and tighten the nut to where the marks you put on with the centre punch and a little bit further so as not to under preload the bearings.

It is a bit of a risky procedure using the air tools so be very careful not to over preload the bearings.

As I said I took it to a shop and explained to them what I wanted them to do. When I brought it back home I took off the driveshaft again to check what they did and they tightened it as I just mentioned, just a degree or so past the marks.

I have put on 30,000 km on the truck since and had not had a problem.

You can also search this site to find other links to this repair.

dont remember, but if you scribe the pinion nut and the end of the pinion just re-install it giving it an extra maybe 1/16" turn past where the two points meet, once you go past that point ROUGHLY you probably put too much pre-load and bearing MIGHT fail sooner, so go slowly. If you go back down and retry the pre-load it might ending up being guess work especially if the spacer is collapsed :). Also remember to brake clean the nut and the flange and pinion surface and apply some sealant there so fluid doesnt leak past the threads.

and you dont want to end up like these idiots, I did a quick search for some links but thought this was pretty funny, but you should be able to find some helpful ones.If you dont do what they do maybe 10min on the quick side, an hour or so if you got a rusted truck or scratch your head a lot :D
