Im getting a 1997 Explorer 4x4 with the V6 SOHC with 103,000 miles and I think I may have to replace the head gasket.
The owner says that he can smell a coolant leak. I asked him to check the oil level and the color of the radiator fluid but he said the oil level was normal and the radiator fluid was a clear/greenish color (like it should be). So, im not positive whats going on. He doesnt know and hasnt been able to figure it out. (Any ideas what it could be?)
If I do have to replace the head gasket, how hard is it, or am I going to have to get a shop to do it? If I have to get a shop to do it how much should I expect to pay?
Thanks
Travis

Check the heater control valve on the passenger side for leaks. A coolant leak does not always mean a head gasket. If the heat and temp gauge is normal a hg is unlikely.

Ya, he never said anything about the temp going up.
He also said that the engine sounded louder tho.

I will get him to check that.
