Getting ready to replace the radio in our 96 Explorer. How much room is behind the radio.

I don't believe there's much space left, an inch or so. Why not just pull it out and see? It pops right out.

There isn't much room back there, but you can fit a double din in.
If you're thinking of mounting something back there, such as a control box for something, there's room to the right of the radio, between it and the glove box, but not too much room.

Thanks guys. I'm replacing the radio for her birthday and a surprise. I didn't want to tip her off.

ok this is probably dumb advice but...DO NOT cut the wires! Get a harness. the P.O. on mine just cut the wires on my Mountaineer. I swear that the folks at the factory used whatever color wires were available because mine were different in some way from every available schematic.

I agree with the harness. But I can probably find a wiring diagram that matches yours pretty easy.

The ones online available to public tell you the color of the wire at the speaker, not at the headunit.
