Keep looking in the tranny and transfer case threads. I just did mine on a 93 xlt, and it was the little bushing on the stop post for the gear. Cost me the 2.35 for the t-20 socket. I think it was DeRocha's post.

Yep, that was the one! Just make sure to mark the housing where the wires go in the cap you take off. The notches are on top, but you are better off making a mark with a marker/file. I checked the motor first off, just with a marine battery I had in the basement. Then I tackled the rest, cleaned contacts, disc, etc. Low and behold the little rubber bushing was squashed! Changed that and it works like new! Little piece of tubing I had laying around.

ok thanks i will look into fixing the switch motor this weekend if i can get some time and it isnt snowing

should i try the test light on the module in the access pannel before tearing in to the switch motor??

i want to make sure that it is in fact the motor and not the computer before i get goin

Thanks

The relay's clicking in the 4x4 controller indicates it has received the input from you pressing 4x4 and has tried to energize the shift motor but cannot do so. To test the controller you'd need to unplug the two wire connectors on the left side of it. Then press the test button (with key on run). If it blinks several time and stops it indicates it is working correctly. If the light never blinks or stay on then it has a problem.

IMO use the information the shift motor rebuild thread to check for a broken stop bumper. If found then fix it and put it back together. This is easy easy easy should take less than an hour start to finish..

The harder part would be to disassemble the electric motor part of unit and clean it. As such I would ignore the steps on taking the electric motor apart since it wasn't the cause of the problem, adds time, and increases the potential for parts breakage (having a brush launched through the air by its spring to land on your driveway isn't ideal).
