I just discovered this on e-bay as well while looking for a switchblade style remote-key. Looks cool but I'm not sure it'll work with my '01 Sport. It seems that due to the size of the head it won't fit into ignitions that have the plastic molding over it... think it would simply be a matter of removing this plastic key-guard thing to make it work?

This one is supposed to work with 98-01 Explorer/Mountaineer or 99-00 Ranger and is about $15 cheaper but it's just the housing. You have to harvest the transponder and electronics from your own key and remote and then stuff it inside:

:dunno:I just ordered two new key FOBs (looked at those) but they said it will not work on a 2002...:dunno:

It should work on a 4dr '02, if you can use an '07 key FOB unit these ones should work as well, unless some one else knows any different??? I just don't have $50 to experiment to see if it'll work or if it looks as cool in real life as it does on the pic hehe

willl that one work on a 05 x
i only see it go's up to 2001 only :(

ya, i have a key like this, i bought a differnt type casue that one looked to bulky. Good luck having ford cutting it cause they think they know everything and said that key will not work. Works just fine plus mine has keyless entry on it.

Do you have a link to where you got yours from? Curious to see what it looks like.

It does have keyless entry. The one I linked to requires you to transfer the guts of the factory keyless fob into it, the other one looks like it might be pre-installed.

Yea, I had the same problem with the keys when I first got my Ex, only one key. You can find 'em cheap on e-bay but unfortunately have to go to stealership to get it coded. If you bring your own key most places should cut it for free though at least.

x2, also I think that if we get a regular key and get that cut and programed, they won't say that it will not work, then we can use the original plus the new key to program the "cool" one ourselves

Walmart won't touch it... Walmart won't even copy a transponder key onto a standard non transponder blank.

If its got a transponder chip, you'll have to find a locksmith.

Went to like 5 places before i went to the locksmith when I needed the blank I got off of ebay cut. Saved $40+ bucks though...

ever looked at the Ford Fusion Keys?
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196414&highlight=fusion

I know it not retractable but it is integrated into one unit tho .
might be something worth considering.

Cool thanks, I'll read through that thread when I get back home. I originally just wanted a key w/ integrated remote but after searching the web became afflicted with "scope creep" and wanted more :D
If this works with an 01 Sport I might just buy one off ebay.

Update: Damn. Looks like these keys only work for PATS II system.

Ace hardware will cut any key you want. They did mine for free.

Heh, the lady at my local Ace went on a crazy tyrant about how the key I brought in was a chip key, and it was worth over $65 and she didn't want to be responsible for missing it up.
Like it was some magical key or something...

I'll see if I have enough $ left over (I'm currently fixing up my house, bought new appliances and with CC, mortgage and truck payments huh....) to buy me one of these, then I'll see if I can fit my fob inside (I have a ford security system, made by code alarm, it doesn't use the same fobs as the stock system) if I can't then that will go to my gf's truck and I'll just get a regular key for mine

will this key work with my 02 mountaineer? i only have one key and button. what would i have to do to get it to work if i bought one?

My Walmart not only cuts my transponder keys, but they also do it for free. Done it 3-4 times across two Explorers. :D

I think it will work, you need to buy a regular key, have it cut and programmed, an then you can just add this one using the instructions that the seller attaches or there's a sticky here in the site that explains "all that you need to know about keyless entry" tat might have the instructions

when you say regular key do you mean the key that has the chip in like the ones that come with the car or a regular key with no chip in it?

The one with the chip, like the stock one, get that one cut & programmed at your locksmith or dealer and use your current key, plus the newly programmed one to program the "combo" yourself, if you have 2 keys you can program additional keys yourself w/o paying the dealer or locksmith to do it
