Okay i have a 92 x, automatic. few nights ago towed some seadoos to the beach, noticed lotsa transmission fluid when parked..topped it up, but wouldn`t go into d oranythin, eventually it did..seemed fine all week , till now , as i started to have issues going into drive, then finally all i had was reverse, changed the trans.filter, which seemed very dirty, topped up with new fluid, thinkin yehaaa problem solved ..but nada, still wont go into drive ..just reverse..no nothin when i try going into overdrive..drive..2..1..only reverse, have full power in reverse..heeeeeelp..! :monkey:

my 91 explorer did the same thing, except i only had first gear. no reverse, no shifting out of first. when the tranny does that, it is a simple way of telling you that it is dead. have a tranny shop look at it.

With no power in any shifter position except R, I can say that it is the forward clutch that is not activating. If you had power in 2nd manual (the 2 on the shifter), I would say that it could also be the rear one-way clutch, but since you don't get power in 2, it sounds like the forward clutch. It could be a valve body issue (if there is enough junk plugging up the feed holes for the activation of the forward clutch), but it could be that running the tranny low on fluid (maybe from a blown front seal) burnt up the clutch plates. Did you find the source of the tranny fluid? It had to come from somewhere (pan gasket, rear seal, front seal, pump seal, cooler lines or fittings, cooler) and it would be good to know where it originated.

There are three bands, three clutch packs, and two one-way clutches (sometimes called sprags) on the A4LD...the automatic tranny used for that year behind the 4.0L engine.

fourXfred, thanks but that doesn`t sound to positive...argggg!!
Brain, the leak looked like it was coming out of thefront section, where the bellhousing(?) meets the engine, a friend thought it might be the front seal , I added some lucas stop leak , (exspensive) ..seemed to stop the leak some what, so i topped it up , and was able to drive all week untill wham..one nite I had No OD,D 2 or 1st, just reverse, and lotsa power in reverse, made it back up 2 hills to home in reverse...
The only issues`s i had just prior to "no power issue" was going into d felt like i had to get the rev`s up to engage that gear..like it was slipping..oh and also my 4x4 engage switch now doesn`t work, checking this out we noticed that when the switch is depressed, the module at the back left trunck area, just before the rear windshield washer container , well this module would also click..whats the little red led light mean, and no light would come on the 4x4 switch..

Soooooooooo now what should I do...Thanks for the quick responses....! I have the truck in at aaltech transmission shop. Hope they aren`t going to jerk me around..

Oh, leak-stop - the bane of all true mechanical fixes. Expensive or not, it is what it is. IMHO, it is kind of like applying liquid band-aid when what is really needed is stitches.

That stuff could be the thing that caused you to lose the forward clutch. The thing about those leak-stop products is that they harden on contact with air. If a little piece of hardened leak-stop is plugging up the wrong hole (small holes - very small holes)...well, let's just say you can't turn back time and you have to deal with what you have now.

I had a Ford stealership quote me $2500 for a rebuilt tranny swap. My advise (if you don't trust the integrity of the shop) would be to make a small scratch on the casing somewhere so you can make sure that you have a different tranny in there, if that's what is needed. As for the quality of the rebuild...there isn't a good way to see inside of these things, and even a poorly rebuilt one (or not rebuilt at all for that matter - just a junkyard swap) can last 25K miles or the more probable warranty period of 10K miles.

Good luck, and let us know what the "diagnosis" and remedy is. BTW, I had the front seal blow out on mine also, and it cost big bucks to "fix".

well so as it turns out... aaltech transmission and shock, basically said. for $300 more I could get the "best" rebuild going, at a cost of aprox. $3500. I can`t F---ing believe it, thats more than my insurance book value..I bought this x, off a lot, MILANI motor`s,Burnaby, for $2500. about 3 weeks ago , no wonder he didn`t push me to buy the extended warranty..Hmmm Since i bought it from a "dealer" don`t I get some sorta warranty , like 30 days at least..Just to protect consumers, from scammers...? Damn nothin but bad luck for the past year...sheeeesh..
Well i keep everyone posted.
pssst hey BRAIN..Thanks for the advice...

$3500!!!! Geeze... :banghead:
As far as a warranty - I don't know squat about Canadian law regarding the implied warranty limitations / lemon laws. Might be something to check out QUICKLY!

I don't know if you are handy with tools and such, or if this is your daily driver (making time of the essence), but it isn't brain surgery to rebuild your own tranny, or swap one from a junkyard (there are lots of Explorers and 4.0L Rangers in rollovers and other wrecks - as it is a very popular vehicle - anything from a 90-94 should bolt right up, but try to get a 92-94). Glacier is doing a writeup (w/ pictures) about his rebuilding process. He is going a little further than absolutely necessary in order to try to get the most "bulletproof" A4LD possible. I'm currently rebuilding mine, and others are in the same boat. Here's the link:

There are currently 3 parts to this thread, and it might be more educational than you want, but it is there if you want it. $3500 goes a LOOONG way in tranny parts and tools.

THANKS BRAIN....Well we`ll see, i told the shop just to go ahead...gives me a 3 year warranty, I`m talking to my LAWYER, re:that dealership....
I just wish i had the space to do the work, cause i would have attempted it myself..
Thanks I`ll let ya know what happens...
Thanks for you`re quick replies BRAIN-.....Awesome bro !.
