Hi guys, was driving this morning to work, and when I arrived, I put my car in revers and gunned it to about 3000rpm. I know I'm stupid for doing it...anyways

it reversed normally and then i hit the brakes to stop. when i let go of the brakes to keep backing up it wouldn't move...Id give it gas and it would just rev like it was in neutral.

Driving forward has no problems, 4hi and 4low work fine.

I'm not sure what tranny I have, but the car is a 99 with a sohc. the 4x4 dial in the cabin has auto/4hi/4low.

What can i do to diagnose the problem??

Thanks guys!

ok I read a few threads of ppl with the same problem as myself and saw that I should test 1st if I have engine braking. well it doesn't. It has engine braking in second and D.

Does this mean it is for SURE the revers Band?

Also, I have another 99 explorer parts car that is also SOHC but I have no idea if the tranny is the same. In the cabin the dial is the same as my good car , auto/4hi/4low.

Are my tannys the same? What is the best way to check what transmissions I have?

Thanks guys

if they're both '99 V6's the transmissions should be the same. how close are the production dates?

where would I find the production dates?

i also noticed that when in neutral, the car would creep ever so slightly forward if i gave it gas...it has done that in the past but hardly noticeable,. Now it creeps forward more

ok need update.. its been a week my revers isn't working and I have still been driving the truck daily to and from work.

This morning on my way to work, when I was coming to a stop I heard a clunk in the drivetrain. I thought to my self this would be a good time to see if anything has changed, so I put it in revers, and the car started to go backwards! after giving it some gas it stoped. This happened twice this morning on my way to work. When I got to work, I noticed smoke around my car, and sure enough theres red oil leaking from the trannyh onto my exhaust...

Any ideas?

I would swap out the transfer case, I did the same thing and have seen it on quite a few,

So u think the problem is the transfer case and not the tranny? Im pretty sure its leaking from the tranny....

What i can also do is just use my parts car(it drives rather well except for a few creeks and cracks in the suspension) and rebuild the one in my good car( even modify it during winter)..

What would yall do?

The part where you said it made a clunk and you had reverse again until you gave it gas points at the transfer case, its not that hard and should only take about an hour and a half to two hours to swap,

I am assuming you have checked your tranny fluid, low fluid can cause this, but again if you have checked it and its full then what you describe is pointing to the transfer case

the transfer case also has red oil?

Yes

ok guys, got the tranny off this week end, what a pita!

The hardest part was to take off the driver side crossover/cat pipe...

I followed this thread : http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=126647, but quickly realized it isnt accurate. I did not have to take off the fan shroud.yways..

anyways, to make a long story short, theirs a hole in my tranny! WTF! Also, doesnt seem like anything is wrong with the transfercase..

So, any suggestions as what I should do? Ive decided not to drive the car this winter, so any modification suggestions are VERY welcome!

Thanks

do the obvious ,get another transmission .your band when it broke must have blown those holes in your trans case .

i lost reverse on my ex sport too .no warning, just went for reverse and it was gone .i had no 1st gear engine braking either .

was told by trans guys to just replace it with another one ,a rebuild by a reputable trans shop with a warranty can cost a couple grand .unless you know someone .

i went with a used trans and its still going near 2 years later .when this one goes it will be time to let it go .i have it 11 years now .

those transmissions are plentiful so no problem finding a used one .good luck .

Wow that sucks
