Reverse problem.

I have a 01 ranger I bought this past winter. It had the 2-3 shift flare so I replaced the vb gaskets and used the transgo kit, with success thanks to this forum. Now for the weird thing. The past winter it was having problems going backwards in the mornings. Id set the parking break because of parking on a hill, and I thought it was sticking a little. Moving forward/backwards a couple times would seem free it. Sometime in the spring I replaced the brake cables (old was rusty) and did the vb gasket/transgo job. All seemed good till this winter. The reverse problem is back, and it is not the cables but the transmission rather. when the truck is cold, and the air temp is cold, the truck will only go about 5-10 feet before it stops. It feels as if the brake is applied, but isn't. When I shift it into neutral and back to reverse, it goes another 10 feet or so. When the truck is warm or it is warm outside in the mornings (above 40 deg or so), there is no problem with it. I believe this is why it showed no signs of problems this summer. I figure it was the same problem last winter, in combination with the brake cable. Forward gears are fine, each working individually when selected. truck has about 145,000 miles on it. I thought at first it was something I did wrong the the vb fix, but I am sure now that it did it last winter also, as I remember reverse acting up last winter when I didnt set the parking break. The weird part was the coincidence of the vb job being done in warmer weather, and I assumed all was well. Anybody have any ideas?

Welcome to this forum! I've moved this post into a new thread since the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary is for reference, and is not for individual problems.

Do you have a 2WD or a 4WD? Did you check the tip of the low/reverse servo for chips or cracks? Did you replace the servo's 2 O ring seals? Did you check the reverse modulation valve in the valve body or the reverse hydraulic pressure of the transmission?

It is a 2wd. All I did was the transgo kit updates with new vb gaskets, new fluid and filter. I did check the all solenoids ohms and they was in spec. I didnt see any chips or cracks, but I wasn't really looking for them. Like I said, I had it apart to fix the 2-3 shift flare and didn't realize that there was a problem with reverse, because it was warmer outside when I did the repairs. I know it may sound weird, but it is dependent on the weather. Earlier this week it was in the 20s in the morning and it had trouble in reverse. This morning it was in the up'er 40s and it was fine. Looking for ideas where to start.

Sounds like my best bet is to get a rebuilt valve body. Sonnax talks about a problem with reverse here:

http://www.sonnax.com/announcements/37947-11K.pdf

But is looks like it is kind of expensive to do, especially if you don't have the reamers and jigs. I saw the kit for $121 and the tool kit for $481. Might be ok if you plan to rebuild valve bodies every day! My problem is that this truck is my daily driver and I dont want to tear it apart, see whats wrong, put it together and order the parts, and tear it apart again when the parts arrive.

I've seen the vb on ebay for sale from different sellers, can anyone recommend a good source for a rebuilt vb for a 5r55e?

Does the problem go away once the trans is warm...regardless of outside temp? If so, the only thing I can think of is you have a seal/gasket that is leaking due to contraction in cold temps and allowing pressure to leak to another clutch causing the lock up. That's why going back to neutral clears it up for a few feet. Pressure drops off to that clutch in neutral and takes a few feet to leak enough to apply it again when you go back to reverse. That could be a real ***** to find. One thing I would suggest is to call Transgo. They have a heck of a tech line. See if they have run across this.
