I was looking to get a smoother ride from my '98 explorer xlt. any suggestions

How old are your shocks? Perhaps replacing them will improve ride control.

Welcome aboard! I would also start with the shocks and I would also look at the tires and see what kind of shape they were in.

Nice shocks and some good tires ( good = you gotta spend a little ) will be the hot ticket.

Switching from Goodyear Wrangler RT/S to Michelin LTX M/S improved my ride ALOT

In general, switching to a set of tires that weigh less will improve the ride by reducing the "unsprung" weight.
