I Have

I have just aquired a 99 Explorer which make an unusual, fairly frequent and loud, groaning sound from the RH (from inside the cabin) front wheel when pulling away gently and turning Right at the same time, which then dies away after 2 to 5 seconds. It sounds like the brakes are binding on that side for a short spell. Ford support for Explorers is very weak here in the UK, so I haven't been able to get a diagnosis. There is absolutely no noise pulling away straight ahead or left at any amount of power. The car is in great shape, drives real well, has covered only 33000 miles, is on the original (half worn) Firestone Wildernesse tires and has never been off roaded. I am really stumped on this one and would appreciate any advice. Thanks Perry

Welcome to another UK owner.

I would suggest the CV joint on that side. Jack the front up and with the wheel hard over turn the tyre it it clicks then its the CV. Its not stuck in 4x4 is it?

I had a similar problem with my Windstar and it turned out that the power steering fluid need topped off. I hope that's all it is for you.

Thanks to Howard and KJB checked both your suggeations and not found problem yet

check your front bearing / spindle on that side. If there is play (ie. worn bearing) then depending on how much, the rotor might be just touching the caliper bracket as the bearing "wobbles" just a bit.
