I know that Ford says the limit for the roof rack is 100lbs. Our intent is to get a carrier for longer trips (1500 miles). The issue is, it appears that most carriers weigh in at 35-50lbs empty. This doesn't leave much room for items in the carrier.

Can anyone post some real world numbers that they have experienced with the factory bars? Also, any recommendations on specific carriers are appreciated.

Thanks

...seems too low to be manufacturing cars with 'included' racks instead of as as option...

Always be aware of weight limitations. The maximum capacity of your roof-rack system will be dependent on the lowest-rated part of the system. So, if you have a roof-mounted cargo box that has a weight capacity of 150 lbs, roof-rack crossbars that are rated at 200 lbs, and these are on a roof rated at 100 lbs, then you cannot load more than 100 lbs.

To determine your roof's maximum weight capacity, check your vehicle's owner's manual. Typically, your vehicle will be the limiting factor.

also this is really good, link is on same page as above:

FYI posts on here describe Whisper Bars as the quietest. When you mount bars and leave them empty or with carrier, the wind can howl as it passes over and around them depending on speed. Prob annoying in summer, not so much otherwise, but their design is important.
