My 94 V6 AT surges bad at idle. Checked all vacuum lines OK. If I read it right, It flashes a 33 code which I think is EGR not opening. However, it only shows a "1" seperator code and I was expecting a 11.

So I get this - key on engine off
33
1
33

I put a hose right on the EGR diaphram and sucked on it at idle. EGR seems free as it nearly stalled the engine. Then it threw an "unexpectedly highly EGR" code a 3 digit one . I wasn't expecting a 3 digit code, but that made sense with my EGR testing. Cleared codes. Back to 33.

Am I making a rookie mistake with these codes? What would this code indicate? Should I yank EGR and clean it?

EGR update

I checked the EGR. The EGR is free and open. I have not checked the vacuum gizmo that accuates the EGR itself. :us:

'91 was the only Explorer to output 2 digit codes. Your '94 should be outputting 3 digit codes. Make sure that you're really not seeing:
KOEO 111
separator
CM 111

three digit code

OK, thanks that's a lot different. It must be 111, all pass so I'll be looking for a bad plug wire or something else that wouldn't generate a code.

ah I just posted a new thread on this same deal I was not sure if I had a

111 111 1 111 111 all pass

or a

33 1 33
which would look like this:

111 111 111 111 1 111 111 111 111
is that right?

but looks like if the 33 I would have had more blinks to repeat. I have a 92 but what was throwing me was the hayes manual says 93 was when the 3 did codes were used.

got my answer on another thread, looks like I am good to go.

I also have a 33 code on my 1992 explorer.

1-1-1 slow then 1-1-1 a little bit faster
a little wait then it repeat
and after that the longer wait for the single flash and the other codes.
Insuficient flow of EGR...does it mean that i misconnected my vacuum lines or the EGR begin to rush a little bit?
