rough idle..HELP

hi, im a newbeee here. i own a 04 explorer v6 with 71,000 miles. XLT

i been experiencing with rough idle. it's like the car has not enought power. when i rev it up, the rpm can only go up to 3500. i already changed the spark plugs and wires. Now, the "check engine light" is on. I went to a local shop to pull the code and it's P0305.

can anybody tell me what is the code? is there any good sites for DIY for 3rd gen explorer?

P0305 is an misfire in cylinder #5. My most recent encounter with a misfire was due to a bad fuel injector and oxygen sensor.

You'll need to investigate the unique source on your Explorer...

Causes for the misfire could be:
Faulty spark plug or wire
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Running out of fuel
Poor compression
Defective computer

^thanks for the help. im planning to change my fuel filter tomorrow and also clean my fuel injector. is there any good DIY sites that can help me step by step how to clean my injectors?

Get yourself a couple bottles of either Gumout Regane or Chevron Techron Fuel Injector cleaner. But, more than likely it is a spark issue, like a faulty coil or wire.

i'm having this same problem, but didn't really wanna start my own thread. sorry for the threadjack!

i don't have a CEL, and it's been happening intermittently for several months. i did a big no no and change my wires, plugs, and installed a MAC air intake at the same time. didn't think of it at the time, but should've just did one thing at a time. anyway... sometimes i get the rough idle/sputtering at stop signs, etc. it happened a few times after i first changed it all out, but kind of resolved itself. However, I've been getting crap gas mileage.

i don't drive much during the summer, so now that it's cold, i have been driving more and am irritated by this occasional thing. before diving into my plugs/wires, i made sure they were all hooked up correctly and they are. i know i gapped them properly and didn't have any installation problems. So, saturday, i put my stock intake stuff back on, and it felt like the problem went away. it had been happening every day, so i was like, sweet! All fixed. Well, yesterday it did it again after starting, then seemed to be ok.

So, it's probably something with the plugs/wires, right?? I cleaned the MAF multiple times over the past few months, cleaned the throttle body on saturday. I know there are some other things to check, but is it relatively safe to assume it's plugs/wires since it happened right after that? I have no codes, if I got it scanned could it possibly relay which cylinder is misfiring (if that's the issue) so I don't have to check every plug?? Or do I just need to suck it up and do it lol? Maybe something else coincidentally happened at the same time as the plug change? ughhh!

i know, it's been bugging me on for a month now. as i mentioned before, i already changed the plugs and wires. i even changed the coil pack last week but still no luck. it still having a rough idle and check engine light.

run a fuel pressure test, have you noticed any black soot or smoke from the exhaust? it could be a bad FPR


did you pull the plug in cyl 5? I've had a brand new plug lose it's electrode once, it drove me crazy until I pulled the plugs and noticed what happened.

EGR Sensor

I just posted this on another thread http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=206854, but here's what I wrote:

So I've been having similar problems for about 6 months now. At first my engine was just idling rough (it would try to die, but recover itself) and would feel like it was jumping. Then it started to actually do a combination of idling rough and dying.

I've had it at a local (non-Ford) mechanic several times. I've even let him drive it for a week. He couldn't figure it out.

Yesterday, the check engine light FINALLY came on. Up until then, it was just a guessing game he said. Well he is booked right now, so I decided to take my car to Shuck's and put it on their tester. I received 2 codes:

P1400 Differential pressure feedback EGR circuit low input
P0402 Exhaust gas recirculation flow excessive detected

I called my mechanic and told him the codes. He doesn't believe this is the problem because he says that the EGR doesn't kick in when the car is idling.

I've checked a few other sites and I believe this actually could be the problem. The part #EGR1304 offered by Shuck's for $67.99 seems like a pretty cheap fix for something that has driven me absolutely crazy for the last 6 months.

I am going to try to replace it and see how it goes. I'll update you when I figure out if this is the problem or not....
