rough running and gas smell out exhaust

first time on here. have a 1999 explorer 4.0 sohc the timing guides went out so i pulled motor put all new timing guides. timed it by video i saw on u tube both cams level with were valve cover sits dowel on crank at 12 oclock torqued down every thing right. starts rite up but runs rough and has water like liquid out exhaust very rich smell to sometimes it turns over and stops like something in pistons stopping it but then turns over and starts but have a slight knock coming from under manifold. have rebuilt motors but never a ford with this timing before .
