when i start the 94 4.0 explorer it wants to die sometimes and idles funny all the time. After afew seconds the idle goes good and only sputters on very few occasions. When i popped the hood the MAS was not connected and the intake box was full of a nest of a small critter. cleaned out the box and plugged in the mas, the problem is still there but the check engine light doesnt come on right away and sometimes not at all. I havent titled it or put insurance on it yet so it doesnt leave my subdivision ever but i have got it warmed up and ran it for atleast a 1/2 hour beforer. My question is what could be making the starting idle rough and why does the cel sometimes not come on? Is there a way to pull the codes off of the truck? I have an obd2 code reader but that abviously wont work... any ideas?

does it help if i tell you that i am burning some oil out of the tailpipe? I dont understand the graphs for getting the codes off of the truck? do i need a 12v tester or not and where does the number that correspondes with the problem show up?

if your mas was unplugged, its probably a good idea to unplug your battery for 15 minutes to reset your fuel injerctor, fuel to air ratio. you engine will run a little funny while the computer relearns everything, but that should only be for less than a day. that should solve the rough idle. and best of all its free!

thanks for the idea i never thought of that....
