Always heard you want colder air coming in, but maybe just if you have a turbo or supercharger. Getting air from inside the front fender - then not the hot air under the hood? Never heard of wanting hotter air coming into the intake, but Josh, you're already in Phoenix, so you must be getting some really hot air into your intake. And it improves fuel economy? I've the stock square filter, assumed it was getting air under the hood but no idea really.
You all know I'm a noob about most auto repair/mods so it's interesting finding out here!
The main reason to want cooler intake air is to prevent detonation. Another reason is to be able to meter slightly more fuel into the combustion chamber due to cooler air being more dense. This is desirable to make as much power as possible. For a stock, non high performance engine that is operating as designed from the factory a moderate difference in IAT isn't all that relevant in how it performs.

the only thing this round filter good at

just in time for christma- wait... nevermind... its 70 degrees here due to this weird weather thats freezing wverywhere else and warming here

I could teach miser to ebenezer scrooge, a 1 mpg gain when fuel is $5+ a gallon goes a long way when you have a wife and 2 kids that depend on you to have some income left after filling up the gas tank.
