Routine Maintenance (Pix)

So I bought my 01 Sports Trac about 18 months ago from my parents, and they always took nice care of it. Even with 165k miles on it, we have never had a major problem with it. Well, it being mine now, I did some up-keep maintenance today (thinking it was well maintained when I got it) and I was greeted with a nice air filter:

I also decided it would be a good idea to replace the fuel filter, and in draining the filter after I removed it I was horrified with what looked like mud:

Thats what was left over when the gas evaporated


Anything else I should check for while im at it?


You guys got any horror stories while working on your explorers?

Well changing THAT air filter should sure make it breathe better and get better fuel mileage!! The fuel filter is about typical. I'd clean or change the PCV valve and if your '01 is a Job 2 check the PCV elbow for cracks.

my air filter was clogged up too so i replaced mine yesterday. i got a fram air filter
