1st timer ......

My 2001 XLT, 4.0 V6, 4WD, 5 spd auto trans, seems very torque-y compared to my brothers '93. Both have a 4.0 engine. I realize the 2001 has more horsepower and other engine differences, the 2001 may weigh more, etc, but his seems "smoother".

My Explorer turns approx 1900-2000 RPMs at 55mph. Is this typical ? The '93 is only turning 1500-1600. Why does the '93 run a lower RPM ?

Thanks.

Dave

sorry, i dont know the awnser tot hat question, but i have another one, werent the pre 95 ex's not fuel injected???/

1st possibility -- differential gear ratios not the same
2nd possibility -- different gear ratios in transfer case
3rd possibility -- different transmission gear ratios. along the same lines, different control algorithm in the PCM.
none of which indicates a fault, just differences in design.

And as for, "werent the pre 95 ex's not fuel injected???" All Explorers have been multi-port fuel injected. The '86-90 BII's (predecessor to the Explorer) are multi-port fuel injected.

The xfer case will be 1:1 on both vehicles (unless your in low range)

all Explorers are FI.

The 2001 v6 is a SOHC, a revvier(sp?) motor. It makes it power higher in the rpm band and does have more hp and torque.

The 93 is a 165hp motor that has a red line of about 5000 (actually, its a little less). The 2001 I think is 210 Hp.

Also the gear ratio will also make a difference.
Our '92 with 32" tires (4.10 gears) is MUCH peppier than it was with 3.27 gears and 30" tires. (to compare apples, the 32" tires with 4:10 gears is equivelant to 30" with 3.73 gears).

so you have at least the motor difference and possibly rear end ratio. From what I've seen the sohc explorers usually have a better ratio anyway to keep the motor at a higher rpm (since thats where they make the power)
