rsc chime and no start.

OK so the other day I had the "service rsc now" come up and everything went dead and the engine was still running. Had a buddy come hook up the jumper cables and everything worked fine. So I changed the battery and it worked fine for a couple days. I went to leave today after letting it warm up for some time this morning and same thing. Is the alternator bad or what is going on? 4.0L v6 2008
